This was probably my introduction, and for millions of others, to the legend that is Lou Gehrig. And for so many years, I had Gehrig and Gary Cooper completely confused in my mind–they seemed inseparable. But there’s good reason for it: the role of the Iron Horse seemed to be made for Cooper. Gehrig was a low-key, almost self-effacing athlete and person, which was just the type of character that Cooper built his career on. Their sizes were just about the same. Cooper nailed down Lou Gehrig’s voice, especially for the famous “luckiest man” farewell speech. Hell, Gary Cooper LOOKS like Lou Gehrig! Maybe my confusion is justified, at least on this subject.

PRIDE OF THE YANKEES is the grand-daddy of all baseball movies. Cooper’s performance, as I can’t help but keep mentioning, is stellar. Teresa Wright as his wife helps keep the hankies moist but she is also very spunky and strong. Walter Brennan (who also played opposite Cooper in MEET JOHN DOE where John Doe is a semi-pro pitcher) is in a supporting role here but provides desperately needed comic relief.

And perhaps I’m wrong to categorize PRIDE OF THE YANKESS as merely a baseball film. It is about human potential, human frailty, and above all human strength during times of crisis. Lou Gehrig’s tragedy occurred during a time of extreme crisis in America, and, I believe, his strong steady public appearances helped the nation through it. PRIDE OF THE YANKEES could easily have been named “Strength of America” in my mind. It’s that important a film.

There are all sorts of little imperfections in the 1943 film “The Pride of the Yankees.” The screenwriters rearranged Lou Gehrig’s famous farewell speech at Yankee Stadium so that the best line, “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth,” becomes his exit line (it was the second line in his speech with his actual last line being, “So I close in saying that I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for”). Gary Cooper had enough problems batting right-handed let alone left-handed like Gehrig, so the actor wore a uniform with “KROY WEN” on the front, ran to third base when he managed to hit the ball, and then they reversed the print. Gehrig is shown wearing his famous number 4 when the Yankees play the World Series, but that happened in 1926 and 1928 while the Bronx Bombers did not start wearing uniform numbers until 1929 (Gehrig batted cleanup and was 4, Babe Ruth batted in front of him and was therefore 3). The film talks about how Gehrig won the Triple Crown on the day he was married but Gehrig won the Triple Crown in the 1934 season, the year after Lou and Eleanor were married in 1933.

But none of that really matters because “The Pride of the Yankees” remains the standard by which all sports biopics, whether of baseball players or anyone else, are judged. Even those who were not weaned and raised on baseball know that the title character is going to die of Lou Gehrig’s disease and the film takes full advantage of that foreshadowing: when Gehrig gets into his first game and refuses to come out after being hit in the head by a thrown ball, manager Miller Huggins asks, “What do we have to do to get you out of the game? Kill you?” Irving Berlin’s song “Always” becomes a recurring musical theme throughout the film, another reminder of Gehrig’s mortality.

In many ways “The Pride of the Yankees” is more of a love story than a baseball theme. It starts off as a rags-to-riches story, where Gehrig’s mother (Elsa Janssen) insists her son will be an engineer and does want him wasting time playing baseball. Eventually the fame and money opens her eyes, but then Lou meets Eleanor Twitchell (Teresa Wright) and has a new “best girl.” One of the most impressive aspects of this film is how it touches on the two darker sides of the Lou Gehrig story, the friction between his overbearing mother and his society wife along with the strained relationship that developed between Gehrig and Babe Ruth. The film really only touches on these aspects and Ruth, playing himself, is usually a smiling figure when he shows up on screen, except for when Gehrig is eating his new hat and he is listening to Gehrig’s farewell speech.

Cooper was nominated for an Oscar for his performance and even though he is rather awkward and a bit old for the role, he captures the essential dignity and class of Gehrig. It makes sense that one American icon is being played by another. Having been nominated of a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar for “The Little Foxes” in 1941 she received another nomination in that category in 1942 for “Mrs. Miniver” and also one for Best Actress that same year for “The Pride of the Yankees.” Wright won for “Mrs. Miniver” and lost out to Greer Garson for Best Actress (because of the war the Oscars were made of plaster for the first time, but were replaced by “real” Oscars when the war ended). “The Pride of the Yankees” was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, but only won for Daniel Mandell’s Film Editing.

Walter Brennan as sportswriter Sam Blake and Ludwig Stössel as Pop Gehrig provide a lot of the comic relief in the film. Brennan’s role is rather low-keyed for him while Stössel has several fine moments where he tries, usually without success, to stand up to his wife. Appearing as themselves are Yankee players Bill Dickey, Bob Meusel, and Mark Koenig, and the familiar voice of Bill Stern makes it on screen as well.

Gehrig’s tragic death at the age of 38 makes all of his records even more astounding given that his career was cut short. Sportswriter Jim Murray once described the tall, strong Gehrig as a “Gibraltar in cleats,” and “The Pride of the Yankees” provides a sense of that. For me the most poignant scene comes before Gehrig enters Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, when he encounter 17-year-old Billy (David Holt), the lame boy in the hospital (Gene Collins) for whom Gehrig hit two home runs in a World Series game in the film’s most extended baseball sequence. The irony that Gehrig could inspire Billy to rise up and walk but Fate had conspired to strike down the Iron Horse who played in 2,130 is enough to reduce most of us to tears before Gehrig ever steps to the plate for the last time to talk about how lucky he is.

The biggest problem most people had with King Kong was its length, so there’s no surprise that reaction by the general public to the release of an extended edition of another 3 hour-plus Peter Jackson film was almost the equivalent of a collective groan.

The surprise is that everything added to the Extended Edition of King Kong should have never been cut. More dinosaurs and more creatures and more action on Skull Island only improves the film, and one wonders if these scenes were cut mostly for time and pacing, why wasn’t a little bit of the 51 minutes of pre-Skull Island snipped or perhaps a few overly drawn scenes of Kong and Anna gazing into each other’s eyes?

The more noticable scenes are that of a rampaging Ceratops and a fun scene of an underwater monster attacking Adrien Brody and Co. while they are rafting down a river. A bit more character development with some seedy behavior by Carl Denham (Jack Black) and heroic deeds by Jack Driscoll and the shipmates add a bit of flavor to the male characters literally overshadowed by Kong in the film. The spider pit sequence is also a bit lengthened with some more lines by Jack Black. Overall, a worthy 13 minutes of added material, but the film still feels too long in the last act.

The special features to this extended edition are the special features that were missing from the first release of the Kong movie, including a commentary from Peter Jackson and extensive behind the scenes features, describing the making of Kong from concept artwork to the screen a la the performance of Andy Serkis.

I enjoyed the extended cut, but I don’t know that this lengthy movie is better served with added material. It’s not like the LOTR films where the additions enhance your viewing and understanding of Tolkien’s world. But hey, I am not going to complain about more dinosaurs and the raft sequence I was disappointed was missing from the original cut.

I have no breakdown of what scenes are make up the extra minutes, but from Perter Jackson’s comments and Comic Con presentation, there have been indications of what might be make up the running time…

One thing to note from this release – there is no DTS soundtrack on this release, which has disappointed and even angered a lot of fans…. Benchmarking from the Lord of the Rings extented dvd releases, this is an ommission that trully expected… Be mindful…. Never the less, this is a strong release, from a director who understands what a dvd presentation should be. Place this 1 on your christmas wishlist!

I live with a Vietnam Vet who served in the late 1960s with 1st Cav. Medivac. During service he earned two Purple Hearts, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal. Since WE WERE SOLDIERS concerns the 1st Cav., Randy wanted to see it. I reluctantly agreed; I am not partial to war films and I dislike Mel Gibson, and Randy is very hard on Vietnam War films. He dismisses PLATOON as a Hollywood 8×10 glossy; says APOCALYPSE NOW is an interesting movie that captures the paranoia, but all the technical details are wrong; and describes DEER HUNTER as excellent in its depiction of the strangeness of coming home but so full of plot holes that he can hardly endure it. And about one and all he says: “It wasn’t like that.”

He was silent through the film, and when we left the theatre I asked what he thought. He said, “They finally got it. That’s what it was like. All the details are right. The actors were just like the men I knew. They looked like that and they talked like that. And the army wives too, they really were like that, at least every one I ever knew.” The he was silent for a long time. At last he said, “You remember the scene where the guy tries to pick up a burn victim by the legs and all the skin slides off? Something like that happened to me once. It was at a helicopter crash. I went to pick him up and all the skin just slid right off. It looked just like that, too. I’ve never told any one about it.”

In most respects WE WERE SOLDIERS is a war movie plain and simple. There are several moments when the film relates the war to the politics and social movements that swirled about it, and the near destruction of the 1st. Cav.’s 7th Battalion at Ia Drang clearly arises from the top brass’ foolish decision to send the 7th into an obvious ambush–but the film is not so much interested in what was going on at home or at the army’s top as it is in what was actually occurring on the ground. And in this it is extremely meticulous, detailed, and often horrifically successful. Neither Randy nor I–nor any one in the theatre I could see–was bored by or dismissive of the film. It grabs you and it grabs you hard, and I can easily say that it is one of the finest war movies I have ever seen, far superior to the likes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, which seems quite tame in comparison.

Perhaps the single most impressive thing about the film is that it never casts its characters in a heroic light; they are simply soldiers who have been sent to do a job, and they do it knowing the risks, and they do it well in spite of the odds. Mel Gibson, although I generally despise him as both an actor and a human being, is very, very good as commanding officer Hal Moore, and he is equaled by Sam Elliot, Greg Kinnear, Chris Klein, and every other actor on the battlefield. The supporting female cast, seen early in the film and in shorter scenes showing the home front as the battle rages, is also particularly fine, with Julie Moore able to convey in glance what most actresses could not communicate in five pages of dialogue. The script, direction, cinematography, and special effects are sharp, fast, and possess a “you are there” quality that is very powerful.

Randy did have a criticism. “I don’t think there would be time for casualty telegrams to actually get home while the battle was going on,” he said. “After all, it only lasted three days.” I myself had a criticism; there were points in the film when I found the use of a very modernistic, new-agey piece of music to be intrusive and out of place. And we both felt that a scene near the end of the movie, when a Vietnamese commander comments on the battle, to be improbable and faintly absurd. But these are nit-picky quibbles. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a damn fine movie. I’ll give Randy, who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, the last word: “It may not be ‘the’ Vietnam movie. I don’t think there could ever be ‘the’ Vietnam movie. But they get everything right. That’s how it looked and sounded, and that’s what I saw, and this is the best movie about Vietnam I’ve ever seen.”

This is war and it truly is hell. Outnumbered on the field and backed by the politically driven Defense Department of the time, one battalion finds itself outnumbered and fighting for its life in the jungles of Vietnam.

A recent reviewer here mistook what this movie was about. It is NOT about America’s war in Vietnam and all the ideology behind it. Its about a battle that occurred in the early years of that war between a new type of specialized fighting unit and a very determined enemy. America wanted to engage the enemy for the first time and this is the battle. The only politics involved here is the decision not to declare a National Emergency thus allowing the Army’s most experienced soldiers to leave at the end of their enlistments, when ironically they were most needed. This movie is about a battalion commander training his unit, getting orders and shipping off to war. It also gives an excellent look at what the wives had to endure during that terrible time.

If one wants to look at the politics of this war, check out HBO’s Path to War. Path to War shows the speech were LBJ sends this unit, the Air Cav, to Vietnam and the political reasoning behind it. It goes through LBJ’s escalation and McNamera’s change of heart on the winnablity of the war. Highly recommend it.

Anyway, in realism this ranks up there with Saving Private Ryan. By reading the book you get a much better grasp of what happened as well as the story not told of what happened at LZ Albany. That encounter was even a worse then what happened at LZ X-Ray.

All told this movie gives the feel of how horrible, horrowing and confusing first-hand combat can be. One decision can lead to winning the day, or as the movie shows, getting yourself cut off and most of your men killed. As for accuracy to what occurred, a group of soldiers that were there appeared on The History Channel’s “Hollywood vs History” program and they concurred that it was 75-80% factual. 20 – 25% Hollywood. That’s probably a good ratio indeed. Oh, and the little American Flag at the end was real, not Hollywood. And Sam Elliot deserves an Academy Award for his portrait of American Hero Sgt. Major Basil Plumley.

Ever since I watched the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Trials and Tribble-ations” back in 1996 and saw the classic Enterprise displayed with modern effects, I dreamed about one day seeing the entire Orignal Series retouched in such a magnificent way. 10 years later, that dream came true. Granted, the series does still retain that 60’s feel (especially with the style of the music, and of course the “military uniform” mini-skirts), there was so much of it that made for great television even for today. The effects being updated really gives the series credibility and believability for viewers and allows the original series to fit in properly with all the incarnations that came afterward. Bringing it to High-Definition was truly a great idea, and the live-action image quality is drastically improved, so much so that at times it gives the series an entirely new feel!

Agreed by both casual viewers as well as die-hard fans, the second season of “Star Trek” provides us with a multitude of favorite episodes. Two episodes in particular that are given excellent treatment and incredible updating are “The Doomsday Machine” and “The Immunity Syndrome”. “The Doomsday Machine”, next to “The City on the Edge of Forever” is considered one of the best from the Original Series, even in its unrefined form. The updating on this episode put it into near movie-quality, far surpassing many Star Trek episodes, includng many from other spin-off series, and even perhaps a couple of the motion pictures. An interesting effect, to me, was how the remastering of “The Immunity Syndrome” made a not-so-great episode into a spectacular episode! The 1966 effects were good at the time, but the remastering gives it a whole new sense of realism and scope. Other classic episodes like “Amok Time”, “The Trouble With Tribbles”, and “Mirror, Mirror” are given good treatments, also.

As of August 6th, I’ve purchased this set and have been thoroughly enjoying it as much as I knew I would. One of the most common complaints of one-star reviewers is that this season, unlike the previous season’s release, is ONLY on DVD, not on Blu-ray or even HD-DVD. Don’t let that discourage you. Even in this standard DVD version, Star Trek is given new life unlike ever before. This DVD’s visual quality is far better than any previous releases, especially since that this is a down-conversion of the cleaned-up High-Definition source. On a regular 480i/p CRT TV, it looks superb. On an HDTV, a good 1080p DVD up-converter will give you an excellent picture from the DVD; granted of course, it will not be the same as an HD release (no up-converter can do that, but they can get close). The truth of it is that this DVD will be better than what you can see on broadcast TV. I’ve even noticed that the standard DVD quality is better than the “HD” TV broadcasts.

There have also been those who have wondered what Gene Roddenberry would have thought of this rebuffing of the series. To answer that, here is a segment from an interview with the executive producers of the remastered project on that very question:

“What do you think Gene Roddenberry would think of the remastered effects?

Dave Rossi: When Gene passed away and his estate requested that all memos and paperwork from the Original Series through TNG be turned over, I was the person whose job it was to wade through 27 years of material. One theme that popped up with some regularity in Gene’s memos was “What can we do to improve the visual effects?” While that alone isn’t an answer, the support the Roddenberry family and people like Bob Justman have shown during this project really reinforces the notion that Gene was always striving to improve the effects to help bring the world of Star Trek alive. We’re honored to help fulfill that wish.

Mike Okuda: We had a number of long talks with Matt Jefferies before he died. For understandable reasons, Matt was one of our heroes. He was inwardly very proud of his work on Star Trek, but he was always very apologetic for the limitations of 1960s production techniques. He kept saying how he wished he had the technology that was developed after the show ended. We always responded by reminding him that his designs were a major reason why the show remains successful and watchable to this day. At the same time, it convinced us that he would have been the first to stand in line to update his own work, if he had been able.”

Bottom Line — If you are willing to wait for the Blu-ray versions, that’s fine. I’m not. As a lover of the Original Series, it’s just too good to pass up. My hat’s off to to all those who participated in this extraordinary remastering effort and for turning a dream of mine into reality.

The second season of “Star Trek: The Original Series” was a particularly strong one with many outstanding episodes but it also had its share of duds as the grind of producing a weekly TV series wore down the production team. This new remaster uses digitally restored episodes along with new visual effects added recently. Episodes such as “The Doomsday Machine” and “Amok Time” both benefit substanially from the new visuals. The former episode a tense one about an ancient artifact from a long forgotten war that destroys planets features new visuals that compliment the story. The original model for the U.S.S. Constellation which is ravaged by the planet eater was an AMC model that looked terrific at home not so terrific when compared to the Enterprise model. The visual effects crew burned and damaged the plastic model but it never looked realistic. Here you can actually see the support beams where the skin was torn off the Constellation in battle. It makes the episode that much more powerful and the scenes as the Enterprise swiftly moves in to attack the machine look particularly good even if they are in standard definition on this DVD.

We also get duds like “The Omega Glory” where Gene Roddenberry attempts to use a “Trek” episode as a metaphor for the Cold War. Gene L. Coon left during the second season which means the show lost of one its most creative writer-producers. Coon was one of the finest writers on the production team (along with D.C. Fontana and John D.F. Black during the first season)during the first and second season John Meredyth-Lucas (who wrote the classic episode “The Changling” where the Enterprise’s fate hinges on a case of mistaken identity by an old space probe and which probably inspired Alan Dean Foster’s story “In Thy Image”. That story was to be the pilot episode of the new series with most of the original cast. When “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” was put into production instead Harold Livingston (with some rewrites by Gene Roddenberry) retooled the episode into a feature film directed by Robert Wise) came on board and wrote/directed a number of very good episodes filling much of the void left by the late Coon.

We get almost all the originals special features ported over from the previous boxed set of the second season except for the text commentary tracks. We also get “Billy Blackburn’s Home Movies” which gives us more footage behind-the-scenes narrated by Blackburn that was shot when the show was in production. Additionally, we get the “Star Trek: The Animated Series” episode “More Trouble, More Tribbles” with David Gerrold’s optional commentary track and the “Trials and Tribble-ations” amusing tribute episode from “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. There are also some extras ported over from the “DS9″ set that had this episode on it including two featurettes “Uniting Two Legends” and “An Historic Endeavor” which discusses the challenges of creating this episode, making it work as a “DS9″ episode even though it had a “gimmick” and the difficult in combining the “DS9″ crew into the old “Trek” episode. We also get previews for the episodes. The menu is the same design as the previous set. Kudos to Paramount for including the other two “Tribble” episodes with the extras. While it didn’t cost them much to include they could have given us NOTHING.

In place of a booklet we get the individual plastic cards that have a picuture on the front from an episode on that set along with details on the back about the episodes and extras. I don’t like the cards although they are a clever concept. Which brings us to the flimsy packaging. The plastic case would be great if the hinges weren’t so delicate and broke so easy. The design is sharp and the intent was good but the execution was lacking.

The problem with this set though is simple–this was originally to be a dual sided DVD/HD-DVD combo. While the HD-DVD format may be dead, Paramount went ahead and used the two sided hybrid discs that they had purchased for the previous season set to manufacture these but didn’t put anything on the “HD” side of the disc except the same disc info as on the previous set. I understand that Paramount was reluctant (with their funding from Toshiba pulled who paid Paramount for the exclusive rights to release this to HD-DVD)to continue on but they should have finished what they started for HD-DVD owners. If nothing else, Paramount should have put episodes on the flip side with the original visual effects so fans could view either version of the show.

I’m disappointed that Paramount didn’t put together a Blu-ray version in time to coincide with this release but I suspect they recognized that many fans will buy this AND the Blu-ray so they could double dip. The HD masters were probably already prepared so they should have come out at the same time.

Regardless, this is a fine season with some episodes sporting new visual effects that make a difference while others they are mere decoration. The extras are fine but Paramount should have included the original episodes with the original visual effects or the HD-DVD versions. They also should have released this to Blu-ray at the same time. Recommended but with hesitation because you just know a Blu-ray version is in the pipeline.

Volume 3 of the “What’s Unique Scooby-Doo? ” DVD collection, is one of thhe better volumes out there. It contains four episodes from the television series, and the monsters featured in them are the classic Halloween stuff. I liked the DVD becomes the episodes weren’t clear mysteries or slow give-aways. Each case was different and unusual, with a very organized place, clever clues, and a very surprising ending. One of the best Scooby-Doo incarnations, I might say these episodes are even better than the unusual “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? ” A nice volume to bewitch!

Even though the episodes aren’t necessarily my approved ones of the series, I do have to say that they deserve no less than a 10/10. This is a grand volume the entire family would appreciate!

If you’re looking for a family reveal to sight on Halloween, or any time of the year for that matter, you’ll want to take up What’s Recent Scooby Doo? Vol. 3 Your children will delight in the frolics of the Mystery Inc Gang as they solve crimes dealing with a vampire, mummy, sea monster, and yes, a High Tech futuristic house. As my 13 year stale son says, “These cartoons have a location, they blueprint you into the present, and they’re fun to gape.”

The animation here is first rate and the entire thing is shot like a live-action film with some fantastic long shots, tall theatrical panning and even at one point, during Quasimodo’s song “Out There” a realistic camera flare (I did a double grasp the first time I saw it!) Hunchback is filled with all sorts of gargantuan “tricks” like this. Lighting effects here are nothing short of shapely – often subtle they sometimes change in an instant dramatically altering the mood of the section. Frodo’s demonic song “Hellfire” is perhaps one the most unpleasant and gross moments to emerge from Disney and the animators let loose.

The prologue to the movie alone is a minor masterpiece and, like Beauty and the Beast, marvelously prepares us for the whirlwind of a epic to buy location.

The complaints about the singing and dancing gargoyles Victor, Hugo and Laverne, are simply wrongheaded. I read the Hugo classic too, and know they’re not in there. What the complainants fail to realize is these gargoyles live only in Quasimodo’s imagination. He invented these companions to ease an otherwise tortured, lonely, friendless life. The culmination of all of this becomes positive in the spectacular song “A guy like you” which finishes with pigeons flying and hearts and banners and ribbons and Quasimodo being noted and then BAM immediately upon the conclusion of the final notes, the room becomes the same sad, dank, splintering tower filled with relics, junk and heartbreak. It’s one of the movie’s most shattering effects.

While deserved praise goes to the animators and crew, the declare talent here is, in my notion, Disney’s very best. Tom Hulce goes to the very soul of Quasimodo and gives a performance that is as poignant and shattering as anything he has done (Hulce also happened to be the best Hamlet I’ve ever seen.) Distinct lines (”I am a monster, you know”) will ring in my ear forever. Hulce has a resplendent train and renders “Out there” with such abandon and vigor it makes my hair stand on demolish. In the unruffled “Heaven’s light” (which sequences into a elegant shot of the bells frantically ringing the opening theme), Hulce brings a fragility to such lines as “no face as ghastly as my face, was ever meant for Heaven’s light” that only a heart of stone would not be moved. Switching from pathos to rage, Hulce lets us feel the hidden rage and disaster that this character also possesses. It is a truly worthy performance.

Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Tony Jay, Paul Kandel – and the rest of the cast all sound at the top of their game creating unbelievable and brilliant characters.

Alan Menkin and Stephen Schwartz derive to the heart of the matter with net and songs – a sound – that are as integral a section of the telling of this record as the animation and voices.

What of Claude Frollo’s lascivious desires for Esmerelda and wanton acts upon Quasimodo and gypsies? And that ending…a bit of a downer don’t you judge? Well, beget it or not, Disney stays fair to each of these facets of the original…with the exception of the tragic conclusion, of course.

The villain (Frollo) is among the most outrageous characters ever portrayed in a Disney movie, and unlike Jafar (”Alladin”) or Hades (”Hercules”), there is nothing amusing about him. On the other hand, the animators went a petite overboard with Quasimodo, who kinda looks like a red-headed Chris Farley. And Phoebus has the personality of Al Gore…if he were any more wooden you’d have to check him for termites. Also, some very provocative characters from the book are regrettably absent. Where’s Pierre Gringoire, Jehan Frollo, and Sister Gudule? Peaceful, the animation is breathtaking, and the finale is nearly flawless…preferred to unique version if you’re a sentimental fan of jubilant endings.

The movie contains a few hilarious subliminal references, as when Quasimodo (Tom Hulce) is dressed up briefly as Amadeus. The music is astonishing and supports the film’s most compelling scenes: Esmerelda singing “God Relieve The Outcasts” while taking sanctuary in the cathedral, the counterpoint of Quasimodo’s “Heaven’s Light” to Frollo’s “Hell Fire,” and the heart-pumping rep leisurely the finale. Probably would have been given a PG rating if not for Eisner’s influence over MPAA.

My one star review is not about the TV show; Wonder Woman is simply awesome. It is to review this particular bundled version, which most likely is fair the 3 individual separate sets shrink wrapped together and sold as “The Complete Collection”. Check out your local stores like Target – mine has them for about $15 each.

Yes! The complete second season of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon is one of my favorites, with 13 classic episodes from the point to. However, the violence was turned down a bit from the 1st season. The Turtles do not employ their weapons that remarkable, whereas they often fought with them during season 1. Also, the humor has been upped quite a bit, with some proper tongue-in-cheek moments(although the fresh comical did notably have a few as well) . But then again, not to say that was a abominable thing, as that was one of the things that made this series memorable. The season starts off with Shredder’s return, aided by inept inventor Baxter Stockman once more. The next 4 episodes feature a subplot of 3 alien crystals known as the “peruse of Sarnath.” The Turtles and Shredder hurry to catch them each, but the 3 crystals wind up causing all sorts of mayhem, from bringing machines to life to creating insane killer plant monsters, and the Turtles must deal with the havoc. “Case of the Killer Pizzas” is the classic episode with those monster meatballs monsters, and boy are they evil. The Turtles have to reluctantly team up with Shredder when the creatures pick up too out of hand. Bebop and Rocksteady return in “Enter: The Sail,” when Shredder poisons April, in an attempt to purchase the Turtles out when they try to retrieve the antidote. Things go from unpleasant to worse when Baxter is merged with a sail and attempts to engage both groups out. “Splinter No More,” sees Splinter become Hamato Yoshi again! The Turtles wind up chasing Shredder again, but he leaves a minute trap that ends up turning them against each other! The Neutrinos approach relieve in “Teenagers from Dimension X,” and those frogs design their first appearance in “Invasion of the Punk Frogs.” “Current York’s Shiniest” is a hilarious episode in which the Turtles meet a cybernetic cop, REX-1. April gets her genes merged with a cat, “The Cruise” style, in “Catwoman From Channel Six.” In that episode, Irma also meets the Turtles for the first time. The final episode is “Return of the Technodrome,” a huge episode in which the Technodrome returns to Earth! These are some first-rate episodes, some I haven’t seen in a long time! April 26th is going to be a enormous day!

13 episodes on one DVD equals over 3 hours of uninterrupted fun. The quality is handsome and all that blah blah blah. No extras yes but who cares!? I want the vintage episodes (which is exactly what is here!!) and not a bunch of cheesy extras taking up state that may have cost us a few precious chapters. If you are a fan and have been waiting for this release – honest occupy it!! You’ll care for it!!

Harry Nilsson had a point and knew exactly what it was. This allegorical classic had a simple but scream message–accept everyone for who they are and not force them to fit into a preconceived belief of who they should be. Oblio and Arrow his dog are banned from the town they live in. Why? Because the Putrid Count decides that anyone that can beat his son at a game (misuse of power) and looks different (Oblio’s the only child with a round head not a pointed head) shouldn’t be allowed in the town. He’s called pointless by the Count and others. But Oblio in Nilsson’s extended allegory finds that nothing is pointless least of all himself.

A charming film bulky of luminous imagery, “The Point” remains a classic to this day regardless of which one of the narrators you heard when you saw it. For the represent, Dustin Hoffman was the unique narrator. He was replaced by Ringo Starr and, then, finally Alan Thicke (of “Growing Disaster” fame) . The narrator on the recent album was, of course, Nilsson himself. He would have done a exquisite job of narrating this inviting classic but elected to go with a professional “actor” in each case.

There’s not distinguished in the diagram of extras. We can go directly to each song which is a nice touch although including Nilsson’s current album (with his narration) would have been nice. Also, what about deleted scenes, a gallery of character designs and, perhaps, some footage of Nilsson himself? Ah well, perhaps next time.

The relate quality is quite edifying although there’s some minor analog imperfections such as dirt and debris but, on the whole, the film looks remarkably favorable. The soundtrack recorded in mono has more presence than the videotape version. I would have liked a surround mix of the fresh songs but that would have required remixing the unusual album mastertapes and that’s probably not going to happen anytime soon. Also select up Harry’s album of the same name. The reissue of Harry’s classic album supervised by Curtis Armstrong (yes, THE Curtis Armstrong of “Moonlighting Fame” and who gave a beneficial performance as the owner Ahmet Ertegunof Atlantic Records in “Ray”) includes two early versions of songs that ended up on the album as well as a replica of the current booklet that came with the album.

I remember watching this cartoon almost 20 years ago – and then again, unbiased 2 years ago on a worn-out VHS. The message is simple yet to the point: In fact, everything has a point. And the music is so very appealing – from “Me and my arrow” to “Are you sleeping”. If you like Beatles – type music, you’ll like this soundtrack. The cartoons are simplistic yet never stupid and may actually succor in getting the message of this movie more clearly.

The movie starts with us being introduced to a village in which everything has a physical point. People peer like coneheads. Dogs, homes – everything has a physical point. The birth of a boy with round head causes difficulty in the village which ultimately leads to him being banished. Most of the movie depicts Oblio’s adventures with his dog named Arrow in the “Pointless Forest”. After learning some notable lessons, he returns to his village. Rather than spoiling the ending, I’ll let you fetch out the outcome.
